Sisterhood

"Help one another, is part of the religion of sisterhood."  ~Louisa May Alcott

Busy September Update

Where does the time fly?  It's been over a week since I've had time to sit and post, and since the last post we've celebrated a couple birthdays!  Amber is 15 now and yesterday my man turned 40!  It's time to share some pictures!

Amber had a couple of her friends over for a birthday sleepover and we also went to Orillia for a visit to celebrate.  She had a relatively relaxing birthday celebration with a visit to the mall, some movie watching and snack eating, and of course a delicious cake from the bakery!

Rick, on the otherhand, well he had an exciting day at school yesterday.  I may have mentioned in passing to one of my inside people on the staff that Rick might be reaching a pretty big milestone, so I think the news spread and it turned out to be a very busy day for the princi"pal".

I think his day went something like this:  Class after class visited his office to sing, "Happy Birthday" and deliver their wonderful cards and expressions of appreciation.  Rick was blessed with a lovely crown to wear, a large button with flashing lights that read, "It's My Birthday", a birthday horn type of thing to blow and make noise, and the "piece de resistance", an inflatable walker with all kinds of priceless warning signs on it.  I believe the office staff snuck into his office the night before to decorate it with streamers and balloons.
Now you would think that after working with him for two years they should know by now that if you give Rick toys to play with, he will use them as much as he can!  I'm quite sure he made the most of his "props" and entertained everyone who cared to be entertained!
It's probably safe to say that he drove the office staff crazy all day.  I believe the secretary Mrs. VanDijk is quoted as saying, "It was a long day...A very long day!"

Taylor and Amber had sports team practices after school till 5 yesterday, so after they got home and showered, we all went out for a lovely late dinner.  Everyone around the table seemed to be rather tired.  It must be nearing the end of the week.

The Schenk home has been very busy since school started.  Actually, to be more precise, the people in the Schenk house are very busy.
Amber is on the King's junior basketball team again this year and they have practices and games four nights out of the week.  Sometimes she has the early practice session from 3:30-5pm, and other days it's the late one from 5-6:30pm.  So far, her team has a 1-1 record!  They have twice as many girls as last year, so we're hoping they win twice as often.  (To be honest, I'm not sure if they won very many games last year...so I think they are off to a good start!)

Taylor and Levi are on the soccer and crosscountry teams at school as well, so with their two schedules, they are at after school practices till 5pm four days of the week.  In summary...the children are busy...and Rick and I are playing taxi...or chauffeur...whichever you prefer...

I am happy to report that after two weeks my back is markedly better.  I really can't believe it's taking this long to get better.  It's still not 100%, but I'm working on it!  I can't wait to hit the tennis court again!  I really miss it.

The Tuesday morning Ladies Bible Study has begun again and so has the Wednesday night Kids club. Taylor is out of KC and into the youth group this year, but I am trying to take both Levi and David to KC.  It's kind of late for David on a school night, but if I leave right away at 8:30, he might make it to bed by 9pm.  We'll see how it goes.

Well, it's time to share a few pictures and get some house work done.  It's been a while since I've pushed the vacuum around in this house, so maybe I'll give it a go today!  (Don't worry mom, others in this home have vacuumed during the past two weeks...just not me!)

The office staff was kind enough to email me some pictures of the aging principal...Enjoy!

One For the Record Books

The other day I was so eloquently waxing about how I always tell my kids to do their best for God.
Well, the other day Amber received this award.  So I asked myself, how in the world does someone accomplish an average like that?  (I could never do it. Wow!)
I guess the answer is simple...she did her best.
God has blessed that girl with a mind.
As her parents, we pray she'll use it for His glory.  It's only because of Him...all the glory goes to God!

To Bless Someone Else...

Well I've scanned and posted this certificate of appreciation not for the purpose of boasting about what Taylor has donated, but to keep for years to come.  Sometimes we misplace and lose stuff in this house, so now I will remember this summer as the year when Taylor donated her long blond locks.  Some child somewhere will be wearing her hair some day.  What a great thing to be able to bless someone else...

Taylor, thank you for doing that.  I know there were lots of times when you wanted that hair cut off and I wouldn't let you.  Thank you for sticking with it and blessing someone else.  You did it and we love you! ♥

Off to the Races!

The new school year has begun and everyone has hit the ground running.  Sports team try-outs began last week already, so we have a young man and lady trying out for the boys and girls soccer teams and cross country, and the eldest lady trying out for the high school junior basketball team.  These are exciting days with new schedules, new teachers, new school supplies, new running shoes, hopefully some new friends, and new enthusiasm.  September is an exciting month but I always find it one of bittersweetness.  We had an absolutely beautiful summer.  The weather was lovely, we enjoyed amazing quality time together as a family, and now we are back in the thick of "it".  I'm always sad to see summer go...

September brings the beginning of another year of growing and watching the kids take another step towards greater independence.  That's a good thing, I think, but as a mom it's always tough to cut loose more strings and step back and let them experience things for themselves.  I suppose it's a mom's instinct to want to protect her children and to try to prevent them from making the same mistakes I made, but making mistakes is how we learn and grow.  If I never let our kids struggle or experience failure, they'll be missing out on important learning opportunities.  I'm learning that helping our children go through those times is a blessing for them and myself.  It's giving me the opportunity to point them to God.  I can show them that He can supply all their needs and that He can be the constant help and the one that will never let them down.  I want them to rely on Him, not me.

Well, although the beginning of another school year is bittersweet, it's also wonderful.  I'm so thankful for the Christian schools that our kids have the pleasure of attending.  I'm thankful for the godly teachers who pour themselves into their work and their students.  I'm praying God will bless all the teachers and students with perseverance and diligence.  I know that God will continue to supply all our needs as a family and that during this school year He'll never give us more than we can handle.  I pray that everyone reading this will be encouraged to keep on keeping on.

I think as a Christian parent I'm great at telling my kids what to do.  I often have answers for them, but I don't always take my own advice.  I tell my kids, "just do your best for God!"  A parent can't ask more from their child.
What does that mean for me?  Well, when I'm dreading that alarm clock and the routines of this fall, I will keep on telling myself to be the best wife and mother I can be...for God.

"But by the grace of God I am what I am..." (1Cor 15:10a) ~ came across that verse this morning...I know it's only part of what Paul is saying in that text, but I like it...

"Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labour is not in vain in the Lord."  (1Cor 15:58)

"Look out Trinity...Here we come!"

(Sorry Amber, no picture of you heading off to King's...I know you're terribly disappointed♥)

More Bon Echo 2010

I haven't had much time to go through and post some more favourite pictures from camping, but since I'm relaxing and icing this back of mine, it's a great time to do what I've been putting off...
So here are some more pictures from our family camping trip to Bon Echo.

That's all I have time for today...I'll try to get to post some more later.

A Sterling Get-Away

There is a place in Niagara Falls that Rick and I have stayed at a few times now.  It's one of our favourite places...the Sterling Inn.  The original dairy building was built in 1928.  It was one of the largest dairies and ice cream producers in the area.  In the late 80's, it was made into a night club and restaurant and then about 8 years ago it was made into an Inn and Spa.  When it was changed into an Inn, they kept the unique 3 storey "milk bottle entrance", giving it a very unique appearance.
The rooms are large and spacious with hardwood floors and very high ceilings with large beams (I think they are original.)  Breakfast in your room is included (just put in your order the night before). We've never been disappointed in our visits there.  It is very peaceful and quiet and it's just a few blocks away from Clifton Hill as well as a reasonable walk to the Falls.  We usually park the vehicle and walk everywhere...well, most everywhere.
We drive to the Embassy Suites and enjoy a meal at the Keg overlooking the Falls.  The key to getting a window seat is to arrive at the Keg early...we usually go around 4:30...you beat the mad dinner rush and can enjoy the view before it gets hopping busy in there.  So here are a few pics from this August's anniversary get-away visit to Niagara Falls...
